Water And Food Security Key Themes At UAE Pavilion During COP29 Discussions
The UAE Pavilion at COP29 focused on water and food, highlighting their link to agriculture. Abdulla Balalaa, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Energy and Sustainability, emphasised water's role in sustaining life and connecting communities. Professor Daouda Ngom from Senegal discussed the upcoming UN Water Conference in 2026, co-hosted by the UAE and Senegal, as a chance to address water and climate challenges.
Daouda Ngom expressed that the 2026 UN Water Conference aims to engage globally to tackle water scarcity and climate change. He stated, "Senegal is ready to collaborate with the UAE to transform this shared vision into reality." This collaboration seeks solutions for pressing issues affecting communities worldwide.

Shaima Gargash from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs outlined plans for the event. A panel featuring experts like Astrid Schomaker and Kamala Huseynli-Abishova discussed water's cross-sectoral importance. They explored integrating water more deeply into COP processes, including its inclusion in Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
Henk Ovink moderated a session on water's role in policy and investment decisions. Participants included Francesco La Camera from the International Renewable Energy Agency and María Fernanda Espinosa, who highlighted how "water scarcity feeds climate vulnerability." The discussion underscored water's critical role in achieving climate goals.
The UAE Universities Climate Network hosted a panel on innovations tackling global water scarcity. Experts like Dr Samuel Mao from Khalifa University stressed nurturing effective water systems through integration and financing. The discussion aimed at safeguarding these systems worldwide.
Bio-saline agriculture was another focus area at COP29. Dr Tarifa A. Al Zaabi from the International Center for Bio-saline Agriculture (ICBA) explained that "water scarcity and salinity are key challenges." She emphasised collaboration in science-making as essential for addressing these issues.
Exploring Future Climate Resilience
NYU Abu Dhabi academics explored future strategies for the UAE's global climate resilience framework ahead of COP30 in Belem next year. Discussions centred on integrating desalination, reuse, renewable energy, and stewardship for sustainable water solutions.
Sheikha Dr Moza bint Tahnoun Al Nahyan introduced a session on university collaboration supporting women's empowerment in agricultural research. She noted that "the keyword at COP28 last year was partnership; this year it is continuity – to deliver and add value."
Commitment to Climate Action
The day concluded with a National Statement by Dr Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment. She reiterated the UAE's commitment to combating climate change and advancing global action, reinforcing their dedication to sustainable development goals.
