Wadi Mira Restoration Project Supports Local Ecosystem And Environmental Sustainability In Northern Borders

Wadi Mira, a notable valley in Saudi Arabia's Northern Borders Region, has been revitalised with modern techniques to cultivate native plants. This effort supports industrial growth while preserving the environment, aligning with Saudi Vision 2030's focus on sustainability and resource conservation. The valley spans 140 kilometres from Hazm Al-Jalamid to the Iraqi border, attracting locals and nature enthusiasts, especially during the rainy season.

Ma’aden Company has played a pivotal role in this rehabilitation project by planting 2,450 native trees such as Sidr, Acacia, Prosopis cineraria, and Tamarix aphylla along a 1,000-meter stretch of Wadi Mira. This initiative aims to restore the ecological balance of the valley. Additionally, 3.6 million seedlings have been distributed over 9 million cubic meters as part of the green initiative.

Wadi Mira Project Enhances Local Ecosystem

The Wadi Mira project contributes significantly to restoring ecological balance by creating wildlife habitats and combating desertification. It also helps mitigate climate change impacts. The valley now supports diverse bird species and wildlife, showcasing the project's success in rejuvenating local ecosystems and maintaining natural equilibrium.

Hazm Al-Jalamid, located between Arar and Turaif in northern Saudi Arabia, has evolved from a small village into the Kingdom's phosphate capital. The phosphate mine here is vital for the national economy as it produces minerals essential for fertiliser production, supporting global agriculture and grain production.

The project aligns with the Saudi Green Initiative's goal of planting 20 million trees by 2040 using renewable water sources. Through these efforts, Ma’aden aims to transform Wadi Mira into a sustainable natural sanctuary that benefits residents and tourists while preserving the environment and local communities.

This comprehensive rehabilitation effort not only enhances Wadi Mira's ecological health but also supports local biodiversity. By balancing industrial development with environmental preservation, this initiative exemplifies how sustainable practices can benefit both nature and society.
