Waad Al-Shamal: Saudi Arabia's Strategic Gateway To Global Leadership In The Phosphate Industry

Waad Al-Shamal Industrial City is pivotal in bolstering Saudi Arabia's mining sector, which is a key component of the nation's industrial landscape. This initiative aligns with Saudi Vision 2030, aiming to diversify the economy and enhance the value derived from natural resources. The city has attracted investments exceeding SAR 80 billion, highlighting Saudi Arabia's dedication to developing its mining industry as a vital contributor to sustainable growth.

The city spans 440 square kilometers, with 290 square kilometers allocated for development and 150 square kilometers dedicated to Ma'aden phosphate industrial projects. These projects are central to the region’s mining revival. Waad Al-Shamal has become a comprehensive hub for mineral processing, making Saudi Arabia the second-largest exporter of phosphate worldwide.

Three significant projects are underway in Waad Al-Shamal to boost phosphate fertilizer production. The Ma'aden Phosphate Project involves an investment of SAR 21 billion and aims for an annual output of three million tons. Similarly, the Ma'aden Waad Al-Shamal Phosphate Company has invested SAR 31 billion with the same production target. A third project, still under construction, involves SAR 28 billion to further enhance global supply capabilities.

An integrated industrial ecosystem supports these initiatives, featuring primary, transformative, and technological industries. Advanced infrastructure such as modern roads, energy and water facilities, and a fully integrated residential area contribute to operational efficiency and resource sustainability.

Ma'aden has established the Saudi Mining Polytechnic in collaboration with the Technical and Vocational Training Corporation (TVTC) as part of its human capital development efforts. This institute has graduated 1,081 specialists, including 52 women, strengthening local expertise in mining. Additionally, Science Excellence Schools were launched in Arar and Turaif with an investment of SAR 180 million to empower students in scientific fields.

The Al-Jalamid Mine is one of the world's largest phosphate mines, producing 11 million tons annually. These are transported to the Ma'aden Phosphate Industrial Complex in Ras Al Khair for fertilizer production. These fertilizers are crucial for supporting global agricultural needs.
