Villa Hegra Foundation Launches Headquarters In AlUla To Foster Cultural Exchange
The inaugural meeting of the Villa Hegra Foundation's board of trustees took place in AlUla, chaired by Minister of Culture and Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) Governor Prince Bader bin Abdullah bin Farhan. This gathering focused on establishing the foundation as a global cultural exchange hub. Following the meeting, Prince Bader and French Minister of Culture Rachida Dati inaugurated the foundation's headquarters in AlUla, attended by senior officials from Saudi Arabia and France.
Villa Hegra is a unique Saudi-French cultural institution, marking a significant milestone in the partnership between these two nations. It extends historical ties and represents a strategic collaboration between the RCU and the French Agency for AlUla Development (AFALULA). The foundation aims to harmonise people with their environment while preserving AlUla's cultural heritage and natural beauty, aligning with Saudi Vision 2030.

The foundation offers diverse facilities, including spaces for visual arts, design, an indoor cinema hall — a first for AlUla — and a performing arts studio. As an educational and training centre, it empowers talent from Saudi Arabia and beyond, creating new cultural opportunities for AlUla's residents. Villa Hegra serves as a strategic platform for cultural investment, promoting sustainable development through knowledge exchange.
Prince Bader expressed gratitude to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and French President Emmanuel Macron for their roles in strengthening this cultural partnership. He highlighted Villa Hegra as a landmark project between RCU and AFALULA. The minister emphasised that AlUla's vision aligns with Saudi Vision 2030 by fostering international cultural cooperation and expanding creative opportunities.
The foundation will host artist residencies, workshops, theatrical performances, and other cultural events that blend local heritage with international artistic influences. It will also become part of the French Viva Villa network of cultural houses, joining esteemed institutions like Villa Medici in Rome and Villa Albertine in New York. This affiliation enhances AlUla's global cultural presence.
Prince Bader toured Villa Hegra's facilities, which focus on visual arts, design, cinema, and performing arts. He received a briefing on its role as an educational centre dedicated to creativity in AlUla. The minister thanked colleagues and partners involved in establishing this collaborative platform that elevates AlUla's international cultural standing.
Empowering Creativity
The RCU continues to implement strategies aligned with AlUla's vision by investing in creative industries and building partnerships with global institutions. These efforts include pioneering initiatives centred on research, documentation, and knowledge transfer for future generations. The goal is to make AlUla a model that combines historical preservation with contemporary culture.
Villa Hegra will play a central role during the cultural season by hosting various artistic programs that bring together local heritage with international art schools. Beyond its national significance, it strengthens civilizational dialogue worldwide by fostering knowledge exchange through its diverse offerings.
The opening of Villa Hegra marks the culmination of strategic efforts to position AlUla as a global destination for heritage, culture, arts, and sustainable tourism. Its establishment reflects Saudi Arabia's aspirations to promote international cooperation while contributing to sustainable development through culture.
