Vice Minister Of Foreign Affairs Waleed Elkhereiji Addresses Sudan Crisis At London Conference

Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Waleed Elkhereiji represented Saudi Arabia at the London Sudan Conference. He emphasised that the crisis in Sudan threatens not only its people but also regional stability and security in both Arab and African nations. Elkhereiji stated: "Our collective responsibility compels us to intensify efforts to support dialogue, enforce a ceasefire, provide urgent humanitarian assistance, preserve state institutions from collapse, and maintain the unity, territorial integrity, and resources of Sudan."

Elkhereiji highlighted Saudi Arabia's diplomatic initiatives since the crisis began. He mentioned the Jeddah Talks (1) and (2), which led to significant agreements. These talks resulted in the signing of the Jeddah Declaration on the ‘Commitment to Protect Civilians in Sudan’ and an agreement on a short-term ceasefire and humanitarian arrangements. The discussions also established a humanitarian platform chaired by OCHA.

Elkhereiji Discusses Sudan Crisis in London

The vice minister noted that halting external support to conflicting parties is crucial for creating a genuine environment for a ceasefire. This step would pave the way for a comprehensive political solution. Neutralising foreign interference is vital for facilitating humanitarian operations, especially opening safe corridors for aid delivery across Sudan without delay.

Elkhereiji warned against any actions outside Sudan’s official state institutions. He cautioned: "The Kingdom cautions against calls to form a parallel government or any alternative entity, as these are illegitimate attempts that threaten the political process, deepen divisions, and obstruct efforts toward a comprehensive national solution." Such steps could undermine unity and breach legitimacy.

He stressed that any resolution must be a Sudanese-led political solution respecting Sudan’s sovereignty and unity while supporting its state institutions. The Kingdom firmly believes that only through such an approach can lasting peace be achieved in Sudan.

The positive impact of opening the Adre border crossing was also highlighted by Elkhereiji. This move has facilitated aid reaching those in need more efficiently. The vice minister reiterated that maintaining unity and territorial integrity is essential for resolving the crisis effectively.
