Veteran Mutawwif Mohammed Sabgha Reflects On Profession's Legacy And Pilgrim Care In Saudi Arabia
The role of a mutawwif, or pilgrims' guide, is deeply rooted in the history of Makkah. This profession has been passed down through generations and involves welcoming and assisting pilgrims during Hajj. Responsibilities include managing accommodations, ensuring well-being, and coordinating services at holy sites. Additionally, mutawwifs arrange transportation and healthcare to ensure a seamless pilgrimage experience.
Mohammed Sabgha, who has dedicated over 30 years to this vocation, shared insights with the Saudi Press Agency (SPA). He described the profession as a cherished legacy from ancestors. Sabgha stated, "serving pilgrims is an honor, not a burden." His words reflect the deep respect and commitment inherent in this role.

Sabgha highlighted significant advancements in services for pilgrims over the past three decades. He noted that improvements are evident in areas such as crowd management and healthcare. The smooth execution of rituals and enhancement of the pilgrim experience have also seen progress. "The Hajj service system sees continuous improvement each year," he remarked.
The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah plays a crucial role in these developments. They collaborate with government bodies, private entities, and non-profit organisations to create a comprehensive plan for service enhancement. This plan spans from the conclusion of one Hajj season to the start of the next.
Saudi Arabia's extensive resources support these efforts to improve pilgrim services continuously. The Kingdom's commitment ensures that services are assessed for impact and areas needing development or reform are identified. These initiatives aim to provide pilgrims with an optimal experience during their spiritual journey.
Sabgha also emphasised the importance of technology in enhancing pilgrim services. He praised the Nusuk app as a vital tool that integrates various services needed by pilgrims. This app facilitates access to essential information and resources, making it easier for pilgrims to navigate their journey.
The dedication to improving pilgrim services reflects Saudi Arabia's commitment to ensuring a fulfilling Hajj experience for all participants. Through ongoing evaluation and strategic planning, the Kingdom strives to offer unparalleled support to those undertaking this sacred pilgrimage.
