Experts Discuss Sustainable Vegetation Development Strategies At International Afforestation Forum
Yesterday marked the conclusion of the International Forum for Afforestation Technologies, held alongside COP16 of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification. Five-panel discussions took place, featuring both local and international experts. These sessions addressed various topics such as vegetation development, sustainable management, combating desertification, and urban afforestation.
One session titled "Developing and managing sustainable vegetation cover" emphasised major afforestation initiatives like the Saudi Green Initiative and Green Riyadh. These projects aim to plant billions of trees, enhancing biodiversity and improving life quality. Experts noted that sustainable afforestation provides environmental solutions and economic opportunities through by-products like timber and beekeeping.

The session on "Vegetation monitoring and governance" explored modern technologies' role in environmental monitoring. Satellites and drones were highlighted for their ability to gather precise data, aiding informed decision-making. The importance of environmental legislation in Saudi Arabia was discussed as crucial for promoting green investments.
Participants also addressed challenges posed by climate change, including increased forest fires. They stressed the need for advanced technologies to respond swiftly to emergencies. This session underscored the significance of robust governance frameworks in supporting sustainable afforestation efforts.
In another session focused on "Urban afforestation and biodiversity," experts highlighted the strategic planting of trees in urban areas as vital for mitigating climate change impacts. Selecting native plants suited to local climates was deemed essential for reducing carbon emissions and fostering healthier environments.
The benefits of green spaces in cities on mental health were also discussed, with experts advocating for expanding urban afforestation projects. Such initiatives not only enhance biodiversity but also contribute significantly to improving residents' well-being.
Afforestation Along Infrastructure
The session titled "Green belts, roads, and railways afforestation" examined how afforestation can mitigate sand encroachment and improve air quality. Establishing green belts was identified as a sustainable strategy to combat sand movement while reducing climate risks through expanded green spaces.
Participants emphasised that integrating greenery along infrastructure corridors can play a crucial role in enhancing environmental resilience. These efforts align with broader strategies aimed at promoting ecological balance across various landscapes.
The closing panel discussion featured Dr. Ahmed Alfarhan, Chairman of the forum's Scientific Committee, who praised COP16's success along with its exhibition. Discussions centred around Saudi Arabia's dedication to expanding international cooperation for environmental sustainability.
