Vegetation Cover In Imam Turki Reserve Surges To 8.5% Amid Environmental Efforts

In a significant environmental achievement, the Imam Turki bin Abdullah Royal Nature Reserve Development Authority has reported a substantial increase in vegetation cover within the reserve's boundaries. The vegetation cover rate has impressively risen to 8.5 percent, a notable improvement from the 1.4 percent recorded in 2018. This development is attributed to a series of successful desert forestation projects and planting initiatives under the auspices of the Saudi Green Initiative.

The authority highlighted that this positive change is backed by scientific research and field studies, which have observed a vibrant plant flowering since last spring. This resurgence of flora is largely due to the improved air quality and a reduction in dust storm severity across several central regions of the Kingdom. The reserve has made significant strides in its environmental conservation efforts by planting more than 600,000 trees, aligning with the national ambition to plant over 600 million trees by 2030.

These efforts are part of a broader strategy to protect wildlife, restore environmental balance, and rejuvenate the region's vegetation cover. The authority's commitment to these goals has not only increased the vegetation cover rate but also enriched biodiversity within the reserve. To date, over 180 plant species from 38 different families have been registered in the Imam Turki bin Abdullah Royal Nature Reserve. This represents 7.5% of the total plant species found in the Kingdom, underscoring the reserve's vital role in Saudi Arabia's ecological preservation.

The Saudi Green Initiative stands at the core of these achievements, driving forward the nation's commitment to environmental sustainability and ecological balance. Through concerted efforts in forestation and conservation, the initiative aims to significantly reduce carbon emissions and combat desertification, contributing to a greener future for Saudi Arabia.

This progress within the Imam Turki bin Abdullah Royal Nature Reserve exemplifies the tangible results of dedicated environmental stewardship and highlights the potential for similar successes across other reserves and natural areas in the Kingdom. As Saudi Arabia continues to advance its green objectives, such initiatives underscore the country's growing role as a leader in environmental conservation on both a regional and global scale.
