Uzbekistan And UAE Strengthen Ties Ahead Of UNESCO Conference In Samarkand

The relationship between the UAE and Uzbekistan has grown significantly in recent years, with both nations collaborating closely in international forums. This partnership is highlighted by their joint efforts to host the 43rd session of the UNESCO General Conference in Samarkand later this year. Abdulaziz Akkulov, Uzbekistan's Ambassador to the UAE, shared these insights during a dialogue at the Anwar Gargash Diplomatic Academy.

During the session, Akkulov emphasised the vibrant cultural cooperation between Uzbekistan and the UAE. He noted that both countries are committed to preserving heritage and promoting intercultural dialogue. The ambassador praised Uzbekistan's participation in the Sheikh Zayed Festival, where it showcases its traditional arts and crafts through a national pavilion.

Uzbekistan and UAE Collaborate for UNESCO Event

Leading museums from both nations are collaborating on exhibitions and professional exchanges. In March, Uzbekistan joined ALIPH, reinforcing efforts to protect cultural heritage in conflict areas. Akkulov highlighted ALIPH’s regional call for projects launched in April 2025 to safeguard Central Asia’s heritage from climate threats.

Samarkand is emerging as a key international hub for conferences, tourism, and business. It has hosted significant events like the SCO Heads of State Summit in 2022 and the UN World Tourism Organisation General Assembly in 2023. The city will also host the Central Asia–EU Summit in 2025.

The strategic partnership between Uzbekistan and the UAE was formalised during President Shavkat Mirziyoyev's visit to the UAE in January 2025. Akkulov stated, "Uzbekistan and the UAE enjoy dynamic and mutually enriching cooperation in the cultural sphere." His remarks underscore the deepening ties between these two nations.

Upcoming Summits

Uzbekistan is preparing for significant diplomatic events, including hosting the Second Summit of Central Asian Countries and the Cooperation Council for Arab States of the Gulf on 5th May in Samarkand. These gatherings highlight Samarkand's growing role on the global stage.

The dialogue session at Anwar Gargash Diplomatic Academy was attended by Nickolay Mladenov, Director-General of the Academy, along with senior officials from both countries. The discussions focused on aligning efforts towards sustainable development goals through UNESCO initiatives.

This collaboration between Uzbekistan and UAE reflects their shared vision for cultural preservation and sustainable development. Their joint initiatives continue to strengthen bilateral relations while contributing to global cultural heritage protection efforts.
