Utilities For Net Zero Alliance Accelerates Global Shift To Renewable Energy Integration
The World Utilities Congress 2025, under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, is themed "Innovating for a New Age of Utilities." Francesco La Camera, Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), highlighted its strategic link to the Utilities for Net Zero Alliance (UNEZA). This initiative was launched in Abu Dhabi in 2023 before COP28 in Dubai.
La Camera emphasised the crucial role utility companies play in the global transition to renewable energy. He pointed out that significant investments are needed to make electricity grids resilient and interconnected, enabling them to handle clean energy efficiently. The alliance has been pivotal in reshaping global discussions on integrating renewables into power systems.

The UNEZA initiative, launched with TAQA's partnership, aims to integrate renewable energy and build robust energy systems. It has seen substantial progress, expanding its membership to over 60 global utility companies. La Camera described this as a bold step in the evolving global energy landscape.
La Camera stressed that utility companies must now take a central role as renewable energy integration requires modern electrical systems. He noted that the next phase should focus on turning commitments into tangible actions on the ground.
IRENA plans to develop regional strategies tailored to different areas worldwide. These plans aim to create a globally interconnected energy system better suited for accommodating renewables. This approach acknowledges the unique needs of various regions while promoting global connectivity.
The strong international presence at the congress highlights UNEZA's growing importance and momentum in advancing global energy infrastructure. La Camera concluded by noting this underscores the alliance’s relevance in today's energy discussions.
