Urban Future Week Highlights Strategies For Digital Cities And Smart Communities In Dubai

Urban Future Week recently wrapped up at the Museum of the Future, focusing on innovative strategies for creating cities that are both resilient and prepared for the future. This two-day event, organised in collaboration with Dubai Municipality, brought together leaders, experts, and academics from around the world to discuss urban innovation driven by technology and sustainable design.

Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, Director-General of Dubai Municipality, highlighted that the event's success underscores Dubai’s dedication to advancing sustainable city planning and smart governance. He emphasised that the forum aligns with leadership's vision to position Dubai as a global model for human-centred smart cities. This involves enabling knowledge exchange and fostering partnerships to develop urban solutions supporting sustainable development.

Khalfan Belhoul, CEO of Dubai Future Foundation, stated that the future of cities will depend on innovation and bold ideas addressing global challenges. He outlined five strategic priorities: redefining energy efficiency through AI-powered grids, using sustainable materials to tackle thermal inequality, reconnecting humanity with nature, combating water scarcity through renewable solutions, and preserving biodiversity by transforming cities into living gardens supported by artificial intelligence and 3D printing.

Belhoul also mentioned that Dubai aims to be a global laboratory where technology and nature converge to ensure human well-being and sustainability. This vision is part of a broader effort to integrate advanced technologies with natural elements in urban settings.

Majed Al Mansoori, Executive Director of the Museum of the Future, noted that the event enhanced global collaboration in developing actionable urban strategies. These strategies aim to improve quality of life while ensuring environmental protection. The programme included a lecture by Jordanian architect Sahel Al Hiyari titled "Observations on Architecture: An Afterlife of Form," which explored how form and meaning evolve in design through human and cultural interaction.

The event featured key sessions discussing foresight-driven governance, resilient architecture, sustainable urban storytelling, and community-focused design. These discussions reaffirmed Dubai’s role as a global hub for innovation, sustainability, and inclusive urban development.

Actionable Outcomes for Sustainable Development

Bin Ghalita added that Dubai Municipality plans to translate the event’s outcomes into actionable projects. This will involve developing predictive policies, adopting digital tools, and enhancing cooperation between public and private sectors. Such efforts aim to strengthen Dubai’s position in future foresight and flexible governance.
