UNRWA Delivers Food Assistance To 2 Million People In Gaza Following Ceasefire
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has reported significant progress in delivering humanitarian aid in Gaza since the ceasefire on 19th December 2024. The agency, alongside other partners, has provided food assistance to two million people, covering over 90% of the population. This effort has contributed to a slight improvement in food security across the region.
UNRWA has also made strides in restoring healthcare services. Nearly 180,000 residents in Khan Younis, Rafah, and Gaza have regained access to health centres that were reopened by the agency. This restoration is crucial for addressing the medical needs of these communities.

In addition to food and health services, UNRWA has distributed essential supplies to more than half a million individuals. These supplies include blankets, mattresses, floor mats, clothes, cooking equipment, and tarpaulins to shield them from rain. Furthermore, around 64,000 people have been provided with tents for shelter.
Sami Rose, Acting Director of UNRWA Affairs in Gaza, highlighted the agency's dedication to supporting families during this severe humanitarian crisis. Speaking from a health centre in southern Gaza, he stated that UNRWA's efforts reflect their commitment to aiding those affected by the conflict.
Despite facing political and logistical hurdles, UNRWA remains focused on its mission to deliver essential services. Rose noted that for the first time since the conflict began, they could provide large-scale aid and services. This assistance has eased the suffering of two million people.
Rose stressed the importance of maintaining the ceasefire so that all humanitarian agencies can continue their work. He emphasised that ongoing support for UNRWA is vital for sustaining their operations throughout Gaza.
The agency underlined the necessity of global solidarity to help Gazans rebuild their lives. Continued international support is crucial for ensuring that these efforts can persist and expand as needed.
