US-UAE Partnership: Advancing Innovation And Security For A Prosperous Future

The United States and the United Arab Emirates have a long-standing partnership focused on security and prosperity in the Middle East. Ambassadors Martina Strong and Yousef Al Otaiba highlighted this relationship ahead of President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan's visit to the U.S. They emphasised ongoing collaboration in diplomacy, humanitarian aid, and counterterrorism efforts, which have strengthened ties between the two nations over three decades.

In 1974, NASA astronauts visited Abu Dhabi to discuss the Apollo missions with UAE's founder, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. This meeting laid the groundwork for future collaborations, such as the UAE's involvement in NASA's Artemis missions. These missions aim to return humans to the Moon and establish a lunar orbital station through the Gateway programme.

Strengthening U S -UAE Ties Through Innovation

The U.S. and UAE are leaders in advanced technology and artificial intelligence. Silicon Valley and Dubai's "Silicon Oasis" are hubs for AI research and innovation. Partnerships span labs, boardrooms, and production facilities. Recently, Abu Dhabi's MGX teamed up with Microsoft and BlackRock to launch a tech infrastructure investment platform.

Cerebras from Silicon Valley partnered with UAE's G42 to deploy supercomputers for AI training in California and Texas. Mubadala's investment in GlobalFoundries is boosting U.S. semiconductor manufacturing, creating jobs in the innovation economy. G42 is also collaborating with Microsoft Azure on a cloud computing platform in the UAE.

Both countries see value in technology cooperation and are committed to expanding initiatives like data protection standards, research collaboration, and bridging digital divides. The 2009 "123 Agreement" enabled UAE's civilian nuclear energy development, providing low-emission electricity to data centers.

The recent COP28 Climate Conference hosted by the UAE marked a significant moment for U.S.-UAE climate cooperation. This partnership is opening new business opportunities that attract American companies to the UAE, which serves as a gateway to markets across the Middle East, Africa, India, and Asia.

Over 1,500 American companies operate in the UAE, contributing to economic growth and diversification. More than 50,000 Americans reside there. The benefits of bilateral trade flow both ways; UAE investments exceed $1 trillion across U.S. sectors while it remains a top destination for American exports.

The U.S. and UAE continue their strong security alliance aimed at regional stability. Their joint efforts include advancing diplomatic solutions and providing humanitarian aid in Gaza and Sudan. Defense cooperation has seen their troops stand together in six conflicts over 30 years.

This enduring partnership is built on exploring new opportunities while addressing shared challenges head-on. The vision for future collaboration remains focused on enhancing regional peace and prosperity over the next five decades.

Reflecting on past achievements like the Apollo mission inspires both nations as they embark on projects like Gateway together. Sheikh Zayed once said: "If it is God’s will, man can achieve anything; nothing is impossible." This spirit continues to guide their collaborative efforts today.
