UNICEF Highlights Severe Threat To Lebanon's Children Amid Escalating Conflict

The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has raised alarms about the dire situation for children in Lebanon. The ongoing conflict has left many children vulnerable, with their homes destroyed and the healthcare system unable to meet their needs. UNICEF's deputy representative in Lebanon, Ettie Higgins, highlighted these concerns during a video press conference from Beirut.

"On Monday alone, at least 35 children were reportedly killed in Lebanon. This is more than the number of children killed in Lebanon in the past 11 months," Higgins stated. The escalation of violence poses a severe threat to children, especially those from southern and eastern regions who have been forced to flee.

UNICEF Warns of Danger to Lebanon's Children

The displacement crisis is worsening, with approximately 112,000 people already displaced since last October. UNICEF has established 87 new shelters across various regions, including the south, Beirut, and northern governorates. These efforts aim to provide refuge for those fleeing the violence.

In response to the growing needs, UNICEF is intensifying its efforts to supply food, water, and essential items to affected families. The organisation has delivered 100 tonnes of emergency medical supplies to hospitals struggling with shortages. Additional supplies are expected soon to address these critical gaps.

Dr Abdinasir Abubakar from WHO emphasised that WHO is collaborating with partners on a response plan for Lebanon's health sector. Protecting health workers and ensuring the availability of medical supplies are top priorities. Hospitals are overwhelmed by casualties from recent events.

Since last week, thousands have required medical attention due to injuries sustained during conflicts on September 17th, 18th, and 20th. A total of 2,078 surgeries have been performed so far. Currently, 777 individuals are receiving hospital treatment, with 158 in critical condition in intensive care units.

Urgent Need for International Support

The situation for children in Lebanon could be worse than during the 2006 war. The international community must act swiftly to protect vulnerable populations and support local efforts. Immediate intervention is crucial to prevent further harm and ensure safety for those affected by this crisis.

The escalating conflict continues to endanger children's lives and well-being in Lebanon. With an overstretched healthcare system and increasing displacement numbers, urgent action is needed from global partners to provide necessary aid and resources.
