UNESCO Delegation Visits North Riyadh Geopark To Celebrate Its Inclusion In Global Geoparks Network

An official delegation from UNESCO, led by Dr. Lidia Brito, visited the North Riyadh Geopark to celebrate its inclusion in the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network. This marks a significant milestone as it is the first of its kind in the Middle East and Arab world. Eng. Hussam Al-Turki and other officials accompanied the delegation during this visit.

Dr. Brito expressed her delight at the park's inclusion, describing it as a significant achievement that highlights Saudi Arabia's rich natural and cultural diversity. She stressed the importance of using this international recognition to further Saudi Arabia’s ecotourism and educational outreach objectives. The visit ended with an interactive session in Ghamrah Village, showcasing local landscapes and heritage.

UNESCO Celebrates North Riyadh Geopark Inclusion

The delegation explored various unique geolandmarks within the park, including Abu Shaddad Cave, known for its remarkable geological features. They also visited the "Edge of the World" escarpment, famous for its stunning views and rock layers that reveal geological epochs spanning millions of years.

Earlier, UNESCO officially welcomed both North Riyadh Geopark and Salma Geopark into its Global Geoparks Network. This initiative highlights Saudi Arabia’s dedication to preserving geoheritage and promoting sustainable development. The Kingdom aims to have 13 sites inscribed on this network, reflecting its commitment to environmental conservation.

The National Center for Vegetation Cover (NCVC) is actively working on developing these areas to promote biodiversity and nature-based tourism. Their efforts are crucial in ensuring these sites are protected while enhancing their appeal as tourist destinations.

Saudi Arabia's ambition to expand its presence in UNESCO's Global Geoparks Network underscores its focus on sustainable development and environmental conservation. By leveraging international recognition, the Kingdom aims to boost ecotourism and educational initiatives across these geoparks.
