UNESCO Praises UAE Leadership For Commitment To Cultural Heritage Preservation And Global Initiatives
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been recognised for its significant contributions to cultural and natural heritage preservation. Simona-Mirela Miculescu, President of the General Conference of UNESCO, praised the UAE's efforts in this field. She highlighted the UAE as a key partner of UNESCO and a model for others to follow.
Miculescu noted that the UAE's commitment extends beyond its borders. "The UAE not only protects its own national heritage but also takes the initiative to help safeguard global heritage. This reflects its civilisational vision and ethical responsibility toward all humanity," she stated. The UAE supports international projects, including restoring heritage sites affected by conflict, especially in the Arab region.

The recent inclusion of Sharjah's Faya Palaeolandscape on the UNESCO World Heritage List is a testament to the UAE's dedication. Miculescu described this as a strong message about the UAE’s commitment to preserving shared human history and using heritage sites as bridges for dialogue and understanding.
Discussing Faya's importance, Miculescu explained that it is more than an archaeological site. It provides evidence of early human development and interaction with nature in an area of significant geological and cultural importance. The site is linked to early human migrations from Africa to Asia, offering valuable insights for researchers.
The inscription of Faya on the World Heritage List was achieved through meticulous scientific work by the UAE alongside international experts. "Its inscription on the World Heritage List is a highly significant step, made possible by meticulous scientific work and long-term efforts by the UAE in collaboration with international experts, all in accordance with UNESCO’s rigorous standards," she said.
Heritage Preservation and Sustainable Development
Miculescu commended how the UAE integrates heritage preservation with sustainable development plans. The country sets an example by using heritage sites as foundations for cultural and economic growth through sustainable tourism and community involvement. This approach serves as a model for other nations globally.
On bilateral relations, Miculescu expressed pride in UNESCO's partnership with the UAE. "We appreciate its tangible contributions, whether through funding initiatives or actively participating in shaping global cultural policies," she remarked. The UAE views culture as essential for achieving global peace and prosperity.
In her concluding remarks, Miculescu acknowledged the UAE leadership's role in combining modernity with respect for cultural roots. "We view the UAE as a progressive model that combines modernity with respect for cultural roots," she said. She looks forward to future cooperation and more UAE sites being added to the World Heritage List due to their profound value worldwide.
