UNDP Initiates Project To Develop Climate Risk Insurance Policies For Farmers In Arab Region

Dr. Abdallah Al Dardari, Assistant Secretary-General and Director of the Regional Bureau for Arab States at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has introduced a new initiative aimed at supporting 100 million farmers across the Arab region. This project focuses on creating insurance policies tailored to climate risks specific to each area, offering enhanced protection for farmers who produce 70% of the region's food supply.

The first insurance policy is anticipated to be available by late 2025, with an official announcement planned during the International Conference on Financing for Development in Seville, Spain, in July. Dr. Al Dardari explained that this initiative involves a coalition of numerous governmental and private entities, along with global insurance firms, which will allow the coverage to grow as more organisations join.

UNDP Launches Insurance Project for Farmers

The UNDP plays a significant role in the region by allocating around $900 million annually in aid and grants to Arab countries. These funds support efforts related to climate change, economic management, and human development. This financial commitment underscores UNDP's position as a crucial development partner in the Arab world.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is another focus area for Dr. Al Dardari, who stressed its importance in achieving high growth rates. He noted that AI contributes significantly to nearly 70% of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The UNDP's involvement in AI initiatives highlights its commitment to leveraging technology for sustainable development.

During the World Government Summit (WGS) 2025 in Dubai, Dr. Al Dardari expressed pride in representing the UN Secretary-General and highlighted UNDP's regular participation in the summit. The organisation has established extensive partnerships with various summit participants, including governments and private sector entities.

One notable collaboration is with e& to enhance digital infrastructure in the region. Additionally, there is cooperation with the UAE’s Ministry of Artificial Intelligence to build an AI knowledge base. An agreement with Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence aims to develop advanced AI models specifically designed for the Arab region.

Global Knowledge Index

A key project led by UNDP in the UAE is the Global Knowledge Index. This initiative helps shape technology and knowledge economy policies worldwide, including within Arab countries. The index serves as a valuable tool for policymakers aiming to foster innovation and knowledge-based economies.

Dr. Al Dardari also mentioned plans to sign two more agreements with UAE government institutions. These agreements are intended to further strengthen developmental cooperation within the region, reflecting UNDP's ongoing commitment to fostering regional growth and collaboration.
