How To Navigate The UAE Green Visa Requirements: A Guide For Skilled Workers And Freelancers

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has introduced a new residence visa known as the Green visa, catering specifically to skilled workers, freelancers, and self-employed individuals. This visa, which is a significant shift from traditional sponsorship requirements, allows individuals to self-sponsor for a period of five years. The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) has outlined specific eligibility criteria for applicants aiming to secure this visa.

What Are The Eligibility Criteria?

The Green visa distinguishes itself by offering a more flexible approach towards residency in the UAE. Applicants interested in applying for this visa must fulfill one of the stipulated requirements based on their employment status. For freelancers and self-employed individuals, the application process requires a freelance/self-employment permit issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation. Additionally, they need to provide proof of possessing a bachelor's degree or a specialized diploma. A significant aspect of the eligibility criteria is the requirement to demonstrate an annual income of at least Dh360,000 from self-employment over the previous two years or to show proof of financial solvency throughout their stay in the UAE.

Skilled employees, on the other hand, must have a valid employment contract and be classified within the first, second, or third occupational level as per the standards set by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation. The education requirement for skilled employees also includes holding a minimum of a bachelor's degree or its equivalent. Furthermore, they must receive a salary of not less than Dh15,000 per month to qualify for the Green visa.

Benefits And Renewal

One of the key benefits of the Green visa is the empowerment it gives individuals by eliminating the need for a UAE national or employer to sponsor the visa. This significant development is in line with the UAE's strategic vision to attract and retain skilled talents within the country. Applicants who successfully obtain the Green visa can enjoy a sense of security and stability, thanks to its five-year validity. The ICP has also stated that this visa is renewable for the same term upon its expiry, ensuring long-term residency prospects for holders.

In sum, the Green visa introduces a forward-thinking approach to residency in the UAE, catering to the needs of skilled workers, freelancers, and self-employed individuals. By setting clear eligibility criteria and offering the possibility of self-sponsorship for a five-year term, the UAE is reinforcing its position as a desirable destination for global talent. This initiative not only facilitates a seamless residency process but also aligns with the broader economic and social goals of the nation.
