UNCCD COP16 President Eng. Abdulrahman Alfadley Advocates For Holistic Strategies To Address Drought Challenges

Eng. Abdulrahman Alfadley, the Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture, stressed the importance of a comprehensive strategy to tackle drought. This approach should integrate environmental, economic, and social policies. He underscored the need for unified efforts to achieve sustainable outcomes and meet the commitments of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification.

"The purpose of the dialogue is to strengthen global and national policy tools for the proactive management of drought, a critical environmental challenge impacting ecosystems, economies, and societies," Eng. Alfadley stated during a ministerial dialogue on drought resilience.

Eng. Alfadley highlighted international efforts addressing drought through initiatives like the Integrated Drought Management Programme by the Global Water Partnership and the World Meteorological Organization. The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification's Drought Initiative also plays a significant role. These initiatives aim to enhance global cooperation in managing drought effectively.

The outcomes from the Drought Resilience Conference emphasized proactive policies and holistic approaches combining land and water management. Eng. Alfadley reaffirmed Saudi Arabia's dedication to implementing national drought management strategies while considering social and gender diversity.

Financing and capacity building are crucial for effective policy implementation and developing resilience plans at national and regional levels. Eng. Alfadley noted that Saudi Arabia encourages public-private collaboration to mobilize innovative financing mechanisms.

This collaboration was evident during Saudi Arabia's presidency of UNCCD COP16, where both private sector and civil society played key roles. The Kingdom remains committed to creating governance structures that support these initiatives.
