UNCCD COP16 Presidency Urges Strengthened Global Partnerships For Drought Resilience
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, through its Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture, is leading the 16th Session of the Conference of the Parties (COP16) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). The presidency has highlighted the critical need for integrating national drought preparedness with global efforts. This approach aims to foster partnerships that enhance readiness, empower communities, and expand early warning systems.
During an international workshop on the Riyadh Global Drought Resilience Partnership in Cologne, Germany, Deputy Minister for Environment Dr. Osama Faqeeha emphasised these points. The event took place on June 23–24 and gathered representatives from various countries, international organisations, and financial institutions. Discussions focused on governance, technical support mechanisms, and priorities for beneficiary countries in the next phase.

The presidency stressed transitioning from reactive responses to proactive preparedness in national plans. This shift is crucial as drought currently affects over 1.8 billion people globally. By embedding drought preparedness into national strategies, countries can significantly reduce the devastating impacts of this environmental challenge.
Participants at the workshop underscored the importance of developing a practical model to enhance countries' capacities to adapt to drought impacts through multilateral cooperation. This aligns with Saudi Arabia's presidency of UNCCD COP16 and its commitment to advancing international environmental efforts.
The Riyadh Global Drought Resilience Partnership was launched in December 2024 in Riyadh. It represents a pioneering international initiative aimed at shifting global approaches from delayed responses to early prevention and preparedness. The partnership addresses significant challenges such as food security threats, migration crises, and societal stability impacts.
This initiative exemplifies Saudi Arabia's growing role in offering innovative and sustainable solutions to climate-related risks. By fostering enhanced international collaboration and establishing effective partnerships, the Kingdom aims to tackle pressing issues related to drought adaptation.
The workshop facilitated discussions on how best to govern this partnership while providing technical support where needed. Participants also explored priorities for beneficiary countries as they move forward with implementing these strategies.
Saudi Arabia's leadership in this area reflects its dedication to addressing global environmental challenges through collaborative efforts. The Riyadh Global Drought Resilience Partnership stands as a testament to this commitment by focusing on proactive measures that can mitigate the adverse effects of drought worldwide.
