UN Tourism Sustainability Goals: Only 15% On Track, Urgent Action Required To Meet Targets
An exclusive whitepaper created for Arabian Travel Market (ATM) by Digital Tourism Think Tank (DTTT) reveals that only 15% of tourism-related UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are on track to be met by 2030. This highlights the urgent need for increased action within the sector. The report stresses the importance of sustainable development investments.
Research from Visa and Oxford Economics indicates that consumers lack sufficient information and transparency about sustainable travel options. Addressing these issues, the whitepaper "Exploring the Future of Tourism Technology" used insights from ATM's Innovation Wall during its 2024 edition. This platform allowed industry professionals to share ideas, concerns, and solutions for tourism's future.

The whitepaper suggests innovative solutions like gamified recycling programmes and hyper-personalised travel experiences focusing on cultural immersion. These ideas demonstrate the creative thinking needed to address sustainability challenges in tourism. Participants emphasised the necessity for systemic, collective action to shift tourism towards a circular and regenerative model.
Nicholas Hall, Founder and CEO of Digital Tourism Think Tank, stated: "The discussions around sustainability in tourism with people who visited the ATM Innovation Wall highlighted the multifaceted nature of the challenges we face. The path towards a sustainable future requires a multi-pronged approach, from managing plastic waste to fostering responsible travel behaviour and ensuring tourism benefits local communities."
Governments across the GCC have launched various strategies focusing on tourism and sustainability. These include initiatives like UAE Tourism Strategy 2031, Saudi Vision 2030, Qatar National Tourism Sector Strategy 2030, Bahrain Tourism Strategy 2022-2026, Omani National Tourism Strategy, and Kuwait Vision 2035. These plans aim to integrate environmental, social, and economic dimensions into regional frameworks.
Danielle Curtis, Exhibition Director ME at Arabian Travel Market, remarked: "Arabian Travel Market (ATM) is proud to provide a vital platform for the tourism industry to advance its sustainability goals. By fostering collaboration, ATM encourages the development of region-specific sustainability frameworks that integrate environmental, social, and economic dimensions."
Future Prospects for Sustainable Tourism
Sustainable tourism will remain a key focus during ATM's 2025 edition under the theme "Global Travel: Developing Tomorrow’s Tourism Through Enhanced Connectivity." Several sessions will share sustainable practices and discuss ethical methods driving this agenda. The event underscores investing in innovative resource management technologies and forming cross-industry partnerships.
Held alongside Dubai World Trade Centre, ATM 2025's strategic partners include Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism as Destination Partner; Emirates as Official Airline Partner; IHG Hotels & Resorts as Official Hotel Partner; and Al Rais Travel as Official DMC Partner.
The whitepaper also highlights leveraging innovative technologies for resource optimisation while aligning businesses with local communities for equitable economic benefits. Promoting transformative initiatives like cultural immersion experiences is crucial. A collaborative approach involving stakeholders from tech giants to local communities can develop effective solutions.
A United Nations study warns that if current trends continue until 2050, tourism could see dramatic increases in energy consumption (154%), greenhouse gas emissions (131%), water use (152%), and solid waste production (251%). This scenario underscores why boosting investment in sustainable development is essential.
