UN Summit Of The Future Deemed Vital For Sustainable Development, Global Peace

Dr. Mahmoud Mohieldin, United Nations Special Envoy on Financing the 2030 Sustainable Development, has emphasised that the success of the ‘Summit of the Future’ will hinge on governments' dedication to enacting its recommendations and agreements. The summit is scheduled for 22-23 September at the UN headquarters in New York.

Dr. Mohieldin highlighted that one of the summit's key discussions will be the reform of the global financial system to address current challenges. He stressed the importance of updating international financial institutions like the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund to better serve today's needs.

He also mentioned that youth issues will be a significant focus, including their role in job creation, decision-making processes, and innovative solutions for digital transformation and green development. Youth are seen as crucial in these areas, especially in the Arab region where they form a large part of the population.

Dr. Mohieldin underscored the necessity for enhanced international and regional cooperation to achieve sustainable development goals. He pointed out that the Arab region faces substantial challenges such as conflicts and humanitarian crises, which require collaborative efforts to address effectively.

The summit aims to offer practical solutions through regional and international cooperation. Dr. Mohieldin described it as a platform for initiatives and opportunities to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of global systems dedicated to peace and development.

Youth Involvement in Development

The summit will also address youth aspirations by involving them in employment opportunities and decision-making processes. Dr. Mohieldin noted that engaging youth is essential for adopting innovative solutions in various emerging issues like digital transformation and green development.

He stated that monitoring the implementation of the summit’s outcomes would be crucial. This monitoring will occur during the 79th session of the UN General Assembly High-level Week.

Dr. Mohieldin characterised this event as a real opportunity to reconsider international mechanisms and activate initiatives related to sustainable development and global peace.

The Summit of the Future is expected to propose practical solutions through both regional and international cooperation, aiming to tackle significant challenges faced by various regions, particularly those with ongoing conflicts and humanitarian issues.
