UN General Assembly Passes Resolution To Combat Islamophobia Globally
The United Nations General Assembly recently took a significant step towards addressing the growing concern of Islamophobia globally. In a resolution titled 'Measures to Combat Islamophobia,' sponsored by Pakistan on behalf of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, the assembly called for concerted efforts to tackle this issue. The resolution garnered support from 115 countries, with 44 abstaining from the vote, and notably, no country opposed it. This move underscores a collective acknowledgment of the need to address and combat religious intolerance and discrimination against Muslims.
At the heart of this resolution is the call for the appointment of a special envoy by the United Nations, specifically tasked with combating Islamophobia. This decision follows the establishment of the International Day for Combating Islamophobia two years prior, marking a continued commitment to addressing this critical issue. Ambassador Munir Akram, Pakistan's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, played a pivotal role in reviewing and presenting the draft resolution.

The resolution unequivocally condemns any form of religious hatred, including calls for discrimination, hostility, or violence against Muslims. It urges member states to adopt necessary measures to counteract religious intolerance, stereotypes, negativity, and hatred. Furthermore, it emphasizes the importance of prohibiting by law any incitement to violence based on religion or belief.
In his address following the vote, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres highlighted the pervasive nature of Islamophobia. He pointed out various manifestations of anti-Muslim hate and bigotry, including structural discrimination, socioeconomic exclusion, and unequal immigration policies. Guterres warned of the long-term implications of such institutional barriers, which not only violate human rights but also perpetuate cycles of exclusion and disenfranchisement.
Guterres also stressed the destructive impact of divisive rhetoric and stereotypes on societal cohesion. He emphasized that hatred not only undermines equality and respect for human rights but also poses a threat to global peace. The Secretary-General called on individuals and communities worldwide not to remain bystanders but to actively confront and eradicate bigotry against Muslims.
Highlighting the rich contributions of Muslim scholars in various fields such as culture, philosophy, and science, Guterres reminded us of Islam's integral role in our shared history. He celebrated the diversity within the Muslim community, representing a wide array of countries, cultures, and walks of life. This diversity, according to Guterres, is a testament to the wonderful variety within the human family.
The adoption of this resolution by the United Nations General Assembly marks a crucial step in the global fight against Islamophobia. It not only acknowledges the challenges faced by Muslims worldwide but also sets a precedent for international cooperation in promoting tolerance and respect for all religions and beliefs.
