UN Mission In Iraq Advances Structured Transition While Supporting Humanitarian Efforts
The United Nations' top representative in Iraq expressed confidence in the country's resilience and leadership during a Security Council briefing. "Iraq is a nation of profound history, strength, potential, and pride. By working together, Iraqis can continue to make meaningful strides towards stability, prosperity and human rights for all," stated Special Representative Mohamed Al Hassan. He also leads the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).
Al Hassan highlighted UNAMI's ongoing transition efforts, which are being carried out in collaboration with the Iraqi Government Transition Team. The mission is gradually reducing staff and closing offices in Mosul and Kirkuk while maintaining mandated tasks. This process occurs amid significant financial challenges affecting the entire United Nations.

He praised Iraq for its humanitarian contributions to Gaza, Lebanon, Yemen, and Syria. Additionally, he acknowledged Iraq's support for the peace initiative between Türkiye and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (KPP), a militant group.
Iraq is preparing for parliamentary elections on 11 November. The Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) is making progress with UNAMI's technical assistance. Although voter registration is nearing completion with nearly 75% of voters registered biometrically, some logistical issues persist.
Al Hassan assured that the UN remains committed to supporting Iraq due to its belief in the country's potential and capabilities. "The UN will spare no effort in our cooperation and our assistance because we believe in this country and its potential, and its capacities and the capabilities of its people," he affirmed.
