UN Rights Chief Denounces Storming Of Sana’a Office, Calls For Action
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has condemned the storming of his Office’s representation in Sana’a by the Ansar Allah (Al Houthi movement). He reiterated his call for the immediate and unconditional release of all UN staff detained in Yemen.
"Entering a UN office without permission and seizing documents and property by force are wholly inconsistent with the Privileges and Immunities of the United Nations. This is also a serious attack on the ability of the UN to perform its mandate, including with respect to the promotion and protection of human rights, which my Office is there to defend," Türk said in a press release today.

On 6th and 7th June, de facto authorities detained 13 UN staff, including six employees from the UN Human Rights Office. Additionally, over 50 NGO workers and an embassy staff member were also detained. Two other UN Human Rights staff had already been held since November 2021 and August 2023 respectively. All detainees are being held incommunicado.
In response to these detentions and considering the security situation, the High Commissioner decided to temporarily suspend operations in Sana’a and other areas under Ansar Allah control. However, the Office continues its work in other parts of Yemen.
On 3rd August 2024, Ansar Allah de facto authorities sent a "delegation" to the premises of the UN Human Rights Office in Sana’a. They forced national staff to hand over belongings such as documents, furniture, vehicles, and keys. The premises remain under their control.
"Ansar Allah forces must leave the premises and return all assets and belongings immediately," Türk demanded.
The storming of the UN office represents a significant breach of international norms. It undermines efforts to promote human rights in Yemen. The High Commissioner’s statement underscores the gravity of this situation.
The actions taken by Ansar Allah have disrupted essential humanitarian operations. The suspension of activities impacts vulnerable populations relying on UN support.
The international community is urged to address these violations promptly. Ensuring safety for humanitarian workers is crucial for ongoing aid efforts in Yemen.
This incident highlights ongoing challenges faced by international organisations operating in conflict zones. The need for adherence to international laws protecting humanitarian missions is paramount.
The High Commissioner’s call for immediate action reflects a broader concern for maintaining global human rights standards. The protection of UN personnel remains a priority amidst escalating tensions.
