UN Human Rights Chief Warns Of Increased Suffering For Palestinians Due To Israeli Attacks In Deir El Balah
Volker Türk, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, expressed deep concern over recent Israeli actions in the Gaza Strip. He highlighted that displacement orders and subsequent attacks in southwestern Deir El Balah have intensified the plight of Palestinians already facing hunger. The situation, he noted, continues to deteriorate alarmingly.
Türk warned that ongoing Israeli airstrikes and ground operations are likely to result in more civilian casualties and damage to essential infrastructure. He pointed out that the dense civilian population in the area increases the risk of unlawful killings and serious breaches of international humanitarian law. The targeted region hosts numerous humanitarian organisations, including medical facilities and shelters.

The High Commissioner stressed the dire situation faced by residents whose homes have been destroyed, forcing them to flee once more. Many are moving to increasingly crowded areas within Gaza, complicating efforts to deliver aid. Türk emphasised that even these supposed safe zones are not immune from danger.
"Homes have already been destroyed, and thousands have been forced to flee the area again," Türk stated. "Their only choice is to go to the ever-shrinking areas of Gaza where hundreds of thousands are being forced to gather, rendering difficult any attempt to deliver humanitarian assistance. Even these areas are not safe."
Türk reminded Israel of its obligations as an occupying power to ensure the provision of food, medical supplies, and other necessities for the population. He urged Israel to allow immediate and unconditional entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza for those in need. He called for an end to military operations that result in widespread violations of international law.
He further stated, "I remind Israel that permanently displacing people living under its occupation would amount to unlawful transfer, which is a war crime, and in certain circumstances, may also amount to a crime against humanity." Türk's remarks underscore the urgent need for compliance with international legal standards.
The High Commissioner’s statement highlights a critical need for action amidst escalating violence and suffering in Gaza. His call for humanitarian access aims at alleviating some of the immense hardships faced by civilians caught in this conflict.
