UN General Assembly Elects Annalena Baerbock As President For Its 80th Session
Annalena Baerbock, the former German Foreign Minister, was elected as President of the United Nations General Assembly's 80th session. The session is set to officially commence on 9th September. In a secret ballot, Baerbock received 167 votes, while her German counterpart Helga Schmid garnered seven votes. Fourteen delegations chose not to participate in the voting process.
At 44 years old, Baerbock is among the youngest to hold this prestigious international position. She is also the first woman from the Western European and Others Group (WEOG) to lead the General Assembly and only the fifth woman overall to do so. The presidency rotates annually among the UN's five regional groups.

In her acceptance speech, Baerbock highlighted significant global challenges and committed to being an impartial mediator for all 193 Member States. Her guiding theme is "Together for better." She outlined three main priorities: improving UN efficiency, advancing the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, and making the General Assembly more inclusive.
Baerbock stressed that diversity within the General Assembly is a crucial strength for the international community. She called for a United Nations that includes all voices and promotes gender equality, multilingualism, and engagement with civil society and youth.
Addressing Secretary-General António Guterres' UN 2.0 initiative launched in March, Baerbock emphasised that it should not be just about cost-cutting but should reflect bold ambition and readiness for tough decisions. "Our common goal is a strong, focused, agile and fit-for-purpose United Nations—one capable of fulfilling its core mission," she stated.
Baerbock aims for a United Nations that effectively delivers peace, development, and justice. Her presidency will focus on making these goals a reality by fostering collaboration among member states.
The election of Annalena Baerbock marks a significant moment in UN history as she takes on this leadership role with a commitment to inclusivity and efficiency in addressing global issues.
