Global Unity And Solutions Key As 79th UN General Assembly Kicks Off
The United Nations General Assembly commenced its 79th regular session on Tuesday evening, attended by UN Secretary-General António Guterres and representatives from the 193 member states. Philemon Yang, President of the General Assembly, emphasised the importance of equitable economic growth through innovation and green economies in his opening remarks.
Yang highlighted that peace and security would be key priorities. He urged nations to resolve ongoing conflicts in regions such as Gaza Strip, Haiti, Ukraine, and Sudan. "We must invest in all efforts to decrease tensions and instead build trust around the world," he stated.

Human rights and strengthening international law will also remain high on the agenda. Yang noted that enhancing coordination of humanitarian efforts is crucial for timely crisis response and ensuring aid reaches those most in need.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres addressed the session's opening, stressing the urgency of collective action to tackle a world "in trouble." He commended President Yang for his vision and leadership, pledging full support to unite member states around common goals.
"From day one, the United Nations has been the place for multilateral solutions – grounded in collaboration, dialogue, diplomacy, and the UN Charter," Guterres said. He acknowledged the gravity of current global issues and emphasised the need for concrete solutions across various domains.

The UN chief underscored the necessity of addressing poverty, inequality, and climate change. These areas require immediate attention to create sustainable solutions that benefit all nations. The focus remains on ensuring that economic development benefits are accessible to both large and small countries.
The 78th regular session of the General Assembly concluded its work on Tuesday. The first day of the high-level General Debate is scheduled for Tuesday, 24th September 2024.
