UN Raises Alarm Over Escalating Hostilities Along Blue Line Between Lebanon And Israel

The United Nations has voiced serious concerns over the intensifying conflict along the Blue Line and in areas of Lebanon and northern Israel. This escalation poses risks to both Lebanese and Israeli civilians and threatens regional peace. The UN is actively working to ease tensions, with efforts led by the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) to prevent further misunderstandings.

UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, is also engaging with her contacts to support diplomatic efforts aimed at ending violence and restoring stability. The UN spokesperson highlighted that these initiatives are crucial for alleviating humanitarian suffering in the region. The UN has reiterated its call for all parties involved to de-escalate immediately and adhere to Security Council Resolution 1701.

UN Warns of Rising Tensions in Lebanon and Israel

Imran Riza, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Lebanon, described the recent surge in violence as catastrophic. The conflict has spread to previously unaffected areas, leading to widespread destruction of homes and infrastructure across Lebanon. In less than a week, over 700 lives have been lost, thousands injured, and nearly 120,000 people displaced.

Since October 2023, more than 1,500 civilians have died in Lebanon, with 200,000 forced from their homes. Joyce Msuya, Acting UN Emergency Relief Coordinator, allocated US$10 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund for humanitarian aid in Lebanon. This is in addition to US$10 million released earlier from the Lebanon Humanitarian Fund.

The UN spokesperson affirmed that despite challenges in the region, UN military and civilian peacekeepers remain dedicated to their mission. They continue adapting strategies to meet objectives in this hostile environment. The importance of adhering to international law was stressed, urging parties to protect civilians by avoiding indiscriminate attacks.

The UN emphasised that all actors must take precautions to minimise civilian casualties. It remains committed to supporting diplomatic solutions while monitoring the humanitarian situation closely. The organisation aims to assist the Lebanese government effectively as it leads the humanitarian response.

The ongoing efforts by UNIFIL and other diplomatic channels highlight a commitment to restoring peace and stability in a volatile region. By focusing on de-escalation and adherence to international obligations, there is hope for reducing violence and addressing humanitarian needs effectively.
