UN Chief Alarmed By Loss Of Life In Gaza, Demands Immediate Ceasefire

UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed grave concern over the ongoing fatalities in Gaza, condemning the recent Israeli air strikes in Khan Younis, a designated area for displaced persons. "The use of heavy weapons in densely populated areas is unconscionable. Palestinians had moved to this area in Khan Younis in search for shelter and search of safety, after being repeatedly instructed to do so by the Israeli authorities,'' said Guterres in a statement released by the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General during his daily briefing.

Guterres reiterated his urgent plea for an immediate ceasefire and the unconditional release of all hostages held in Gaza. He emphasised that no place in Gaza is safe, highlighting the dire situation faced by civilians. His call underscores the need for immediate action to prevent further loss of life and suffering.

UN Demands Gaza Ceasefire

Earlier today, Tor Wennesland, the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, also condemned the attack. He stressed that international humanitarian law must be upheld at all times, including principles like distinction, proportionality, and precautions in attacks. Wennesland highlighted that civilians should never be used as human shields.

Despite the ongoing conflict, a polio vaccination campaign commenced in northern Gaza today. This marks the third phase of the campaign and is expected to continue through Thursday. According to UNRWA, thousands of children have already been vaccinated. More details are anticipated soon.

The World Health Organisation reported successful delivery of vaccines, cold chain equipment, and finger markers to Gaza yesterday. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus mentioned efforts to deliver more fuel to keep vaccination vehicles operational and resupply hospitals to maintain essential services.

"As the Secretary-General has repeatedly said, there is no safe place in Gaza. He repeats yet again his call for an immediate ceasefire and the immediate and unconditional release of all Israeli hostages and other nationalities still being held in Gaza,'' Guterres stated firmly.

This incident highlights the challenges faced by humanitarian organisations working under extreme conditions. The continuation of essential services like vaccinations amidst such turmoil demonstrates resilience and commitment to public health.

The situation remains critical as international bodies call for adherence to humanitarian laws and protection of civilians. The global community watches closely as efforts continue to address both immediate needs and long-term solutions.
