UN Urges Immediate Humanitarian Support For Civilians In Gaza Amid Ongoing Violence
The United Nations revealed that Israeli authorities have blocked all UN efforts to coordinate access for staff and partners in northern Gaza. Only one mission was permitted, which organisers had to cancel. This disruption hindered essential operations like water delivery. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) highlighted that intensified strikes on Gaza City continue to cause significant casualties and displacements.
Stéphane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, stated, "The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reports that intensified strikes on Gaza City continue to cause heavy casualties and displacements, with attacks over the past week hitting tents, residential buildings and infrastructure. This is threatening the continued operation of life-saving services, including ambulances, health facilities, nutrition treatment support and community kitchens."

Despite ongoing evacuations from Gaza City due to the Israeli offensive, many residents remain trapped. The humanitarian community's capacity to assist them is diminishing. OCHA emphasises that civilians in Gaza City and the north need continuous large-scale humanitarian aid. This requires consistent access and safety assurances for aid workers.
The UN continues to receive distressing reports of individuals being harmed while seeking food or assistance. Between 17 and 22 September, the UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR) documented 21 deaths in such circumstances. These incidents occurred near three militarised supply sites and along the Morag route south of Khan Younis.
Since 27 May, at least 2,340 individuals have died while attempting to obtain food or aid. Over half of these fatalities happened near militarised supply locations, with others occurring along convoy routes. The situation underscores the urgent need for safe passage and protection for those seeking essential resources.
The ongoing conflict has severely impacted life-saving services in Gaza City. Attacks have targeted tents, homes, and infrastructure, jeopardising operations like ambulance services and health facilities. Community kitchens and nutrition support are also at risk due to these disruptions.
Efforts by humanitarian organisations are crucial as they strive to provide necessary support amid challenging conditions. However, without reliable access and security guarantees for aid workers, delivering aid remains a formidable challenge.
The international community must address these barriers to ensure that humanitarian assistance reaches those in dire need in Gaza City and surrounding areas.
