UN Chief António Guterres Calls For Israel And Hamas To Fully Comply With US Peace Plan Terms

US President Donald Trump announced that Israel and Hamas have agreed to the initial phase of his 20-point peace plan. This development follows intense indirect negotiations in Egypt. UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed support for this agreement, highlighting its potential to secure a ceasefire and facilitate the release of hostages in Gaza.

Guterres praised the diplomatic efforts by the United States, Qatar, Egypt, and Türkiye in achieving this crucial agreement. He emphasised the importance of all parties adhering to the terms, particularly regarding the dignified release of hostages who have been held for over two years in Gaza.

UN Chief Urges Compliance with US Peace Plan

The UN chief stressed the necessity for a permanent ceasefire and urged an end to hostilities. The United Nations, alongside the Red Crescent, is responsible for overseeing humanitarian aid entry and distribution under the US plan. Guterres stated that it is essential to ensure immediate and unrestricted access to humanitarian supplies and commercial materials into Gaza.

Guterres reiterated that ending the suffering in Gaza is imperative. The organisation is committed to supporting the phased agreement's implementation while also advancing recovery and reconstruction efforts in Gaza. The Secretary-General called on all stakeholders to seize this opportunity to establish a credible political path forward.

The Secretary-General highlighted the importance of recognising Palestinian self-determination rights and achieving a Two-State solution. This solution aims to enable Israelis and Palestinians to coexist peacefully and securely. Guterres insisted that this moment should be used to end occupation and move towards lasting peace.

"The fighting must stop once and for all," Guterres declared, urging all involved parties to abide by the agreement's terms fully. He emphasised that ensuring peace requires commitment from all sides involved in this conflict.

This announcement marks a significant step towards resolving longstanding issues between Israel and Hamas. The international community's involvement underscores its importance in fostering peace in the region.
