Ukrainian Oleksandr Rupeta Announced Winner Of Prestigious Freelance Photojournalist Award
This year's Xposure Independent Freelance Photojournalist Award (IFPA) ceremony was a significant event that celebrated the exceptional talents of photojournalists worldwide. The ceremony, held in the presence of Tariq Saeed Allay, Director General of Sharjah Government Media Bureau (SGMB), and a full-house of industry peers and photography enthusiasts, marked the third edition of these prestigious awards. Ukrainian documentary photographer Oleksandr Rupeta was announced as the overall winner for his project "The Other Days of Life," which captures human resilience in adversity.
The IFPA 2023/2024 saw 255 entries from photographers across 61 countries, showcasing a wide array of impactful narratives. Runner-up Valery Melnikov was recognized for his work "Apocalypse in Mariupol," depicting the conflict's devastating impact. Other nominees included Diego Herrera Carcedo with "Bakhmut Fortress," Alain Schroeder’s "Plastic Treasure," and Mehdi Mohebi Pour’s "The gradual death of the wetland," each bringing attention to critical global issues through their lenses.

The award ceremony was not just a celebration of photographic talent but also a platform to acknowledge the risks photojournalists take. Lars Boering, Director of the European Journalism Centre and a distinguished jury member, paid tribute to photojournalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty, particularly highlighting the deadly year of 2023-24 marked by the Israel-Gaza war.
