UAEU Researchers Awarded US Patent For Innovative Transformable Swarm Robots In Pipeline Maintenance

The United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) has secured a patent from the United States Patent and Trademark Office for its groundbreaking system of intelligent swarm robots. These robots are designed to inspect and maintain underground pipelines. This development underscores UAEU's commitment to innovation in artificial intelligence, robotics, and sustainable engineering.

Dr. Fady Alnajjar, a specialist in human-centric AI and neuro-robotics, leads the research team. The team also includes Dr. Waleed Ahmed, an expert in additive manufacturing and mechanical engineering; Amged Elhassan, a master's student and research assistant; and Muthanna Ahmed Aziz, a technical engineer. Together, they have created robots that work like swarms of ants or bees.

UAEU Secures Patent for Swarm Robots

The robots communicate with each other to share tasks and adapt to challenges in real-time. Each robot can perform specific tasks such as detecting leaks, capturing images, or conducting repairs. This swarm intelligence boosts efficiency and reduces downtime by minimising the need for human intervention or external drilling.

Dr. Alnajjar explained that these smart robots are designed for integrated operations in complex environments. They can communicate effectively even under challenging conditions. This innovation marks a significant shift in managing underground pipeline networks, especially in critical settings.

The system is expected to lower maintenance costs significantly while reducing malfunctions and preventing leaks or contamination. It aims to extend the lifespan of essential infrastructure by improving operational efficiency.

Dr. Alnajjar highlighted the broad applications of these robots across sectors like water, energy, and municipal services that depend on extensive pipeline networks. He stated that developing this technology aligns with the UAE's goals of sustainability and technological advancement.

Support for Applied Scientific Research

This project reflects UAEU’s dedication to applied scientific research involving students actively in research projects. Dr. Alnajjar noted that university programmes were instrumental in developing this prototype. He expressed commitment to securing more patents that contribute to a knowledge-based economy by solving real-world infrastructure challenges.
