UAE University Pioneers First Master’s In Genetic Counselling In The UAE
The United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) has taken a significant step forward in the field of medical education and healthcare by introducing the first master’s programme in Genetic Counselling in the UAE. This initiative, supported by the Department of Health—Abu Dhabi (DoH), is set to make a substantial impact on the healthcare landscape by providing advanced academic specialisations and preparing a new generation of medical professionals equipped to address the complexities of genetic disorders.
Dr. Muna Al Saffar, Director of the Genetic Counselling Programme at the College of Medicine and Health Sciences at UAEU, highlighted the uniqueness and importance of this two-year academic and clinical programme. It is specifically tailored for those keen on specializing in a field that plays a crucial role in enhancing the wellbeing of individuals and families affected by or at risk of genetic disorders. The programme not only aims to equip students with essential skills and knowledge but also focuses on reducing the genetic condition burden within the community.

The curriculum is designed to produce professional, qualified, and competent genetic counsellors. It covers various critical areas such as paediatric genetic assessment, prenatal diagnosis, cancer genetics, adult genetics, psychological support, patient rights protection, and clinical genetic research. Dr. Rashed Obaid Alsuwaidi, Executive Director of the Healthcare Workforce Planning Sector at the DoH, expressed pride in supporting this pioneering programme. Professor Fatma Al Jasmi, Chair of Genetics and Genomics at UAE University, pointed out that the programme balances advanced genomic technology with strong psychosocial counselling skills and research training.
