UAE Announces 2024 As Year Of Sustainability, Unveils 'Sustainability Champions Society'

Following the directive of UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Year of Sustainability will extend into 2024, unveiling its new slogan "Plan to Action". This initiative aims to involve the public through strategic activities in four main areas: green transportation, water and energy reduction, responsible consumption, and intelligent planting. The initiative's leadership has announced the formation of the Sustainability Champions Society, a new platform encouraging individuals passionate about sustainability to share their experiences and participate in various events across the Emirates.

The official website for the Year of Sustainability, https://uaeyearof.ae/champions, is now accepting submissions for ideas on impactful activities and community projects. Eisa Alsubousi, the Project Lead, emphasized the goal of building on the previous year's achievements to foster sustainable behavior changes. He highlighted the public's growing desire to contribute to these changes and the importance of collective action in addressing climate change for future generations' prosperity.

The Year of Sustainability plans to roll out several activations throughout 2024, including collaborations with government and private sectors focused on sustainability leadership. Community events like Duroor Nights and Sustainability Stops are part of these efforts to encourage public engagement in sustainable practices. Additionally, legacy projects from 2023, such as the "Material Lab", will continue. This project promotes sustainable production among UAE-based creators by focusing on material innovation and repurposing.

A unique educational experience is also in development to help young people learn about environmental challenges through innovative problem-solving. The initiative's activities in 2023 aimed at promoting sustainable action included sustainability guides for the public, mangrove-planting events, and collaborations with the COP28 team to host PopCOPs and showcase sustainability at the UAE House of Sustainability and the Actionists’ Hub.

These efforts reflect a comprehensive approach to embedding sustainability into the fabric of UAE society. By engaging a wide range of stakeholders and leveraging community-driven initiatives, the Year of Sustainability aims to foster a culture of environmental stewardship that aligns with the UAE’s long-term sustainability goals.
