UAE Highlights Importance Of Inclusive Care On World Autism Awareness Day

The UAE will observe World Autism Awareness Day on 2nd April. This day highlights the need for a supportive environment for those with autism spectrum disorder, ensuring their full inclusion in society. The nation is dedicated to fostering social cohesion and sustainable development by empowering individuals with autism to enhance their skills, improve their quality of life, and ensure a safer future.

In Abu Dhabi, the Zayed Higher Organisation for People of Determination (ZHO) offers internationally accredited care and rehabilitation programmes. These programmes cater to 522 students with autism at various centres. Aisha Al Mansoori, Director of the Abu Dhabi Autism Centre under ZHO, stressed the importance of collective efforts from institutions and individuals to support people with autism.

Al Mansoori highlighted that raising awareness is crucial, especially in schools. She stated that early detection plays a vital role in integration. "The earlier the intervention, the easier it is to develop the student's abilities by focusing on education and enhancing their academic and social skills," she said in a statement to the Emirates News Agency (WAM).

The Zayed Higher Organisation for People of Determination customises its programmes for each individual. They design specialised training plans and organise workplace visits. This ensures tasks are performed independently and tailored to each person’s condition.

Globally, ZHO has conducted several sessions of the Bridges of Hope programme. This initiative supports mothers, guardians, and families of People of Determination with intellectual disabilities and autism spectrum disorder in Egypt. These efforts aim to provide guidance and support to families dealing with similar challenges.

Aisha Al Mansoori emphasised that while there are many ways to promote inclusion, awareness is the first step. By educating society about autism, particularly within educational institutions, we can create a more inclusive environment for everyone.

The UAE's commitment extends beyond national borders as it seeks to empower individuals with autism worldwide. By sharing knowledge and resources through international programmes like Bridges of Hope, they aim to make a positive impact globally.

Through these initiatives, the UAE continues to demonstrate its dedication to improving the lives of individuals with autism. By fostering an inclusive society where everyone can thrive, they contribute significantly towards sustainable development goals.
