UAE-US Non-Oil Trade Hits $31.4 Billion In 2023, Eyes Further Expansion

The bilateral trade relationship between the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the United States has shown significant growth, with non-oil trade volumes reaching a notable $31.4 billion in 2023. This figure is anticipated to maintain its upward trajectory into 2024, according to Danny E. Sebright, President of the US-UAE Business Council. In a recent interaction with the Emirates News Agency (WAM), Sebright provided insights into the dynamics of this flourishing trade partnership.

Highlighting the robust exchange between the two nations, Sebright revealed that US exports to the UAE surged to $24.8 billion last year, marking a 19 percent increase from $20.8 billion in 2022. This growth underscores the UAE's position as the premier destination for US exports in the Middle East and Africa for the fifth year running. Furthermore, these exports are a significant source of employment in the US, supporting approximately 125,000 jobs.

UAE-US Trade Exceeds $31B in 2023

On the flip side, UAE exports to the US were also substantial, totaling $6.6 billion in the previous year. The reciprocal nature of this trade relationship is further enriched by UAE's investments across various sectors in the US market, including real estate, manufacturing, healthcare, and technology.

Looking ahead, Sebright identified three sectors with potential for enhanced cooperation between the UAE and the US in 2024: healthcare and life sciences, financial services and private equity, and technology and artificial intelligence. These areas are poised for growth and collaboration, building on the solid foundation of bilateral ties.

The lead-up to the UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) has been marked by significant progress in renewable energy, food security, and sustainability between the two nations. This progress complements the ongoing strength in traditional sectors of their trade relationship such as space, defence, and energy. Sebright's statements underscore a mutual commitment to not only sustaining but also expanding this multifaceted partnership.

The evolving trade dynamics between the UAE and the United States reflect a deepening economic relationship that transcends traditional sectors to embrace emerging technologies and industries. As both countries continue to explore new avenues for cooperation, their partnership stands as a testament to the benefits of international trade and investment.
