UAE University Showcases Sustainability Initiatives At IUCN World Conservation Congress 2025 In Abu Dhabi
The United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) is actively participating in the IUCN World Conservation Congress 2025 in Abu Dhabi. This involvement highlights UAEU's growing influence as a hub for environmental research and sustainability leadership. The university's efforts align with both national and global climate goals, showcasing its commitment to conservation and natural resource preservation.
During the congress, UAEU announced several initiatives and collaborations aimed at addressing environmental challenges. A notable highlight was the announcement of winners for the UAEU–EAD Joint Student Research Grants. These grants empower young researchers to create innovative solutions for environmental issues pertinent to the UAE.

UAEU has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Al Ain Zoo to enhance cooperation in research projects that align with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These projects focus on landscape management and veterinary sciences, reflecting a shared commitment to sustainability.
A new student research collaboration with the International Fund for Houbara Conservation (IFHC) was also launched. This initiative supports biodiversity conservation and natural habitat sustainability. As part of this effort, UAEU will sponsor five student research projects in partnership with IFHC, highlighting its dedication to environmental stewardship.
The university introduced the second cycle of the Postdoctoral Fellowship in Climate Action, which aims to strengthen applied research in areas like renewable energy and carbon capture. The fellowship now includes emerging fields such as climate-resilient agriculture and green technologies, showcasing UAEU’s comprehensive approach to climate challenges.
Additionally, the newly established Desert Environment Research Centre at UAEU announced a strategic partnership with the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD). This collaboration focuses on addressing pressing environmental issues facing desert ecosystems, furthering UAEU's role in sustainability research.
Engagement and Education
At its booth within the Innovation and Patents Exhibition, UAEU displayed various patents and innovations developed by its researchers. A short film titled "From the Wisdom of the Desert to Global Innovation" was screened, celebrating UAEU’s legacy in environmental stewardship.
To inspire young innovators, UAEU organised a 3-Minute Student Research Presentation Competition under the Plant the Emirates SDG Research Programme. This competition aimed at enhancing students’ skills in green innovation and presentations.
Panel Discussions
The university hosted a panel discussion titled "Greening the Future," exploring universities' roles as drivers of environmental transformation. The discussion emphasised integrating sustainability into curricula and promoting innovation-led climate action.
A joint panel discussion titled "Beyond the Dunes" was held as part of a strategic partnership launch between UAEU Desert Environment Research Centre and EAD. Experts gathered to discuss future desert ecosystem research and conservation strategies.
In collaboration with EAD, Tadweer, and Al Ain Zoo, UAEU organised a stakeholder panel focusing on cross-sector partnerships supporting environmental sustainability. This panel highlighted ecosystem restoration efforts and climate resilience initiatives.
Youth Engagement
UAEU students took part in a Youth Storytelling Session titled "From Voices to Movement – Youth, Community, Heritage & Indigenous Wisdom." They shared their ideas on sustainability alongside peers from other organisations, demonstrating their passion for environmental causes.
