UAE Claims Top Spot At Gulf Youth Games With Impressive 37 Medal Haul
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has emerged as the frontrunner in the medal tally after two days of intense competition at the inaugural Gulf Youth Games. The host nation's athletes have put on a spectacular show, amassing a total of 37 medals, which includes nine golds, 21 silvers, and seven bronzes. Hot on their heels is Kuwait, securing the second spot with 27 medals, followed by Saudi Arabia in third place with 18 medals. Oman and Bahrain are in fourth and fifth places, respectively, while Qatar rounds off the list in sixth place.
The UAE's dominance was particularly evident in taekwondo, where its athletes bagged an impressive 18 medals on the second day alone. Standout performances came from Arwa Saleh, Mohammed Al-Dhahouri, and Amna Al-Loughani in their respective categories. The national modern sailing team also added to the UAE's medal tally with a silver in the team race (Optimist).
As the games progress, attention turns to other sports with chess and badminton events set to commence at the Sharjah Cultural Club and Zayed Sports Complex hall in Fujairah, respectively. Sailing competitions continue at the Abu Dhabi Marine Sports Club, alongside football matches and athletics competitions for people of determination.
Fares Al Mutawa, Secretary-General of the National Olympic Committee, praised the Organising Committee of the Gulf Youth Games UAE 2024 for their exceptional groundwork that contributed to a successful start. He highlighted the collaborative efforts that have enhanced the competitive atmosphere and provided valuable experience for participating players.
Al Mutawa also acknowledged the support from the Abu Dhabi Sports Council and Al Wahda Club in facilitating the event. He extended his best wishes to all teams participating in the football competition, emphasizing sportsmanship and high technical levels that promise an exciting future for the tournament.
