UAE Team Emirates-XRG's Tadej Pogačar Secures Strong Lead In Tour De France Stage 18

During stage 18 of the Tour de France, Tadej Pogačar from UAE Team Emirates-XRG strengthened his hold on the Yellow Jersey. He finished second behind Ben O’Connor of Jayco AlUla, gaining an additional 11 seconds, including bonus time, over his rival Jonas Vingegaard from Visma-Lease a Bike in the final 350 metres of the challenging Queen stage.

The 182.6km route was demanding, featuring over 5,000 metres of climbing. It included significant climbs such as the Col du Glandon, Col de la Madeleine, and concluded with a summit finish on the Col de la Loze. Despite efforts by Visma-Lease a Bike to challenge Pogačar, UAE Team Emirates-XRG remained steadfast. Teammates Jhonatan Narváez and Adam Yates played crucial roles in supporting Pogačar during pivotal moments.

Pogačar Leads UAE Team Emirates-XRG in Tour

A critical moment occurred when Vingegaard launched an attack with 6km remaining. However, Pogačar responded effectively. As they approached the final climb, Narváez and Yates set a punishing pace that left several contenders behind. Pogačar made a decisive move 350 metres from the finish line to gain time on Vingegaard and Oscar Onley of Picnic-PostNL, although O’Connor maintained his lead to win the stage.

Pogačar expressed his thoughts: "I wanted the stage win, but the priority is the Yellow Jersey. Visma went hard on the Madeleine and downhill, but we kept our composure. There was no cooperation in the valley, so I waited for my teammates. On the final climb, Ben was strong, but I had good legs and held on to Yellow."

With just three stages left in this year's Tour de France, Pogačar leads by nearly four and a half minutes in the general classification. He remains focused as two key mountain stages await before reaching Paris.

Reflecting on upcoming challenges, Pogačar noted: "Today was the Queen stage, and tomorrow is another big one. Three more to go, then vacation." His determination remains evident as he aims to maintain his lead through these final stages.
