Abu Dhabi And Dubai to Eliminate Hazardous Plastics And Stryrofoam: New Era of Sustainability Begins Tomorrow
Starting June 1, two significant initiatives aim to enhance the UAE's efforts against environmental degradation. Plastic pollution, a global concern due to its adverse effects on the environment and marine life, has prompted the UAE to take decisive action. The country is committed to reducing and recycling plastic waste through advanced technologies, policy measures, and public awareness campaigns.
Dubai's Policy on Single-Use Plastics
Dubai is set to follow numerous global regions that have adopted sustainable alternatives to plastic. A recent update from Dubai Municipality on X (formerly Twitter) highlights a major policy shift starting June 1, 2024. The announcement encourages residents and visitors to transition to reusable cloth bags as part of this initiative.
From June 1, 2024, Dubai will implement a complete ban on single-use bags, including paper, biodegradable, and recycled plastic. The 25 fils fee for bags at retail counters will also be removed. This marks the first phase of the policy, with subsequent phases targeting various plastic items over the next two years.
The second phase, effective January 1, 2025, will ban plastic stirrers, styrofoam food containers, plastic table covers, plastic cotton swabs, plastic straws, and single-use styrofoam cups. By January 1, 2026, single-use plastic cups and lids, plastic cutlery, plastic food containers, and plastic plates will also be banned.
Businesses must comply with these new regulations or face penalties. Non-compliance will result in a fine of Dhs200, which can double for repeat offenses. However, certain plastic bags, such as those used for wrapping meat, fish, and vegetables in supermarkets, as well as rubbish bin liners and laundry bags, are exempt from the ban.
Abu Dhabi's Styrofoam Ban
The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has announced a ban on specific Styrofoam products, effective tomorrow (June 1). This is part of EAD's "Single-Use Plastic Policy", launched in 2020. The ban targets single-use consumer products made of expanded polystyrene, commonly known as Styrofoam.
The prohibited items include cups, lids, plates, and beverage containers. Additionally, food containers for products intended for immediate consumption or that can be consumed without further preparation are also banned. Exemptions apply to items not designed for single use, such as large storage boxes, coolers, and trays used for meat, fruit, and ready-made dairy products. Medical-use products are also exempt.
The policy has already yielded significant results. Up to April 2024, the consumption of 310 million single-use plastic bags has been avoided, and the number of bags distributed at retailers' cash counters has been reduced by 95%. This equates to more than 2,000 tons of plastic waste avoided. In addition, over 1,000 tons of plastic bottles, equivalent to 67 million bottles, were collected last year.
The UAE's comprehensive approach to plastic waste reduction highlights its commitment to environmental sustainability. By implementing these measures, Dubai and Abu Dhabi are setting examples for other regions to follow in the fight against plastic pollution.
