UAE Showcases Vision For Sustainable Transport At Saudi International Rail Conference In Riyadh

The UAE took part in the second Saudi International Rail Conference in Riyadh, which attracted senior officials, decision-makers, and industry experts globally. The conference focused on the future of sustainable transport and highlighted new technologies in the railway sector.

Mohammed Al Mansoori, Under-Secretary for Infrastructure and Transport Affairs at the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, emphasized the Gulf Railway Project's role in promoting sustainable prosperity. He noted that the UAE prioritizes regional integration by linking transportation networks among GCC countries to boost commercial and investment ties.

UAE Highlights Sustainable Transport Vision

Al Mansoori stated, "Regional integration is an essential part of the UAE’s developmental identity. Through the UAE-Oman rail (Hafeet Rail) and the ongoing coordination with our partners in the GCC, we are laying the foundation for a unified Gulf network that connects markets and supports shared regional growth and prosperity."

He also highlighted that the national railway network is a key national initiative reflecting leadership's vision for a diversified economy. Freight operations enhance transport resilience, lower costs, and support non-oil sectors.

The national railway network spans 900 kilometers, linking major ports and industrial zones across the UAE. This direct connection improves transport reliability while reducing logistics service costs per ton-kilometer.

Al Mansoori explained that with AED50 billion invested in the National Railway Programme, it is expected to yield economic returns exceeding AED200 billion long-term. The network drives economic growth and income diversification nationally.

Sustainability Goals and Future Plans

The passenger transport service via Etihad Rail is set to begin in 2026. It will connect cities through an advanced network, enhancing mobility and quality of life significantly.

The national railway network supports UAE’s net zero by 2050 targets by cutting transport emissions by 21% annually by 2050, equivalent to reducing 8.2 million tons of CO2. The country plans to use solar energy, hydrogen, and hybrid batteries in future operations to transition to low-carbon transport.
