UAE Enhances Sustainability Leadership Through Second Cycle Of Sheikh Hamdan Environmental Award

The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has unveiled the second cycle of the Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Environmental Award. This initiative aims to enhance the UAE's global standing in environmental sustainability by recognising innovative projects and practices that protect the environment. The award seeks to inspire excellence across various sectors, encouraging individuals and institutions to contribute significantly to environmental conservation efforts nationwide.

In alignment with 2025 being declared the Year of Community, EAD plans to broaden the award's scope throughout the UAE. This expansion will include diverse societal segments, acknowledging exceptional environmental contributions from both individuals and organisations. A key feature is the introduction of the Emirates Environmental Excellence Model (EEEM), which aims to boost environmental performance and compliance with sustainability standards while fostering research and innovation.

UAE Launches Second Cycle of Environmental Award

H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler's Representative in Al Dhafra Region and Chairman of EAD, highlighted the UAE’s dedication to sustainability. He stated, "The UAE has always been a beacon of environmental leadership, guided by the principles of sustainability, innovation, and responsibility. Our environment is our most valuable asset, and it is our duty to protect and sustain it for future generations."

Sheikh Hamdan emphasised that addressing sustainability challenges requires collective effort. He noted that "Environmental responsibility is not the responsibility of a single entity; it requires the commitment of all sectors – government agencies, businesses, academic institutions, and individuals." The award serves as a platform for uniting these efforts, promoting knowledge-sharing, and driving impactful change beyond borders.

Dr Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary-General of EAD, discussed how the award fosters innovation in sustainability across all sectors. She remarked that "Sustainability is not a choice; it is a necessity." The award underscores EAD’s commitment to safeguarding natural heritage while driving collaboration and highlighting the UAE's role in tackling global environmental challenges.

Recognising Diverse Contributions

The second cycle includes restructuring award categories to better acknowledge varied contributions. The Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Environmental Medal honours those showing exceptional leadership in sustainability. Subcategories like the Environmental Changemaker Medal recognise significant contributions in education and awareness-raising sectors. The Environmental Creativity Pioneers Medal celebrates creative approaches to environmental issues.

Additionally, there are awards for young leaders under 25 who have developed innovative solutions through initiatives like the Environmental Youth Advocates Medal. The Optimal Natural Resource User Medal acknowledges sustainable practices among hunters, farmers, and falconers.

Encouraging Research and Corporate Initiatives

The Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Environmental Research Award includes categories for research institutions focusing on sustainability issues. It also targets university professors and students involved in sustainable development research projects. Meanwhile, public and private sector organisations can compete for the Environmental Performance Award by showcasing exemplary initiatives.

The Corporate Initiatives Award recognises outstanding collaborative efforts between entities or community partnerships that result in positive environmental impacts. These awards aim to support national transitions towards a circular economy while investing in future innovations.

This initiative reflects a commitment to fostering shared responsibility for environmental stewardship across all sectors. By honouring changemakers through various categories such as community service or corporate social responsibility initiatives, EAD reinforces its dedication towards building a sustainable future for generations ahead.
