UAE Proposes Key Initiatives To Enhance Sustainability At International Maritime Organisation

The UAE's proposals to amend the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Council's procedures and expand its working languages have been approved. The UAE also suggested creating a fund to cut greenhouse gas emissions from ships. These initiatives were presented by a high-level UAE delegation during the IMO Council meeting in London, UK.

Hessa Al Malek, Advisor to the Minister for Maritime Transport Affairs at the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, led the delegation. It included Mohammed Khamis Al Kaabi, UAE Permanent Representative at the IMO, and other stakeholders from the UAE maritime sector. Al Malek emphasised that these proposals align with the UAE's strategic vision for a sustainable maritime sector.

UAE's Role in Supporting Maritime Sustainability

Al Malek stated, "The UAE proposals reflect the UAE's strategic vision of making the maritime sector climate-proof, sustainable, and resilient. The UAE is committed to supporting the IMO in its mission of enhancing international cooperation and developing the maritime sector." She highlighted that the UAE is dedicated to supporting projects that enhance sustainability and reduce carbon emissions.

Next year, the UAE will host an event parallel to World Maritime Day. This occasion aims to promote collective efforts in advancing maritime innovation and sustainability. Al Malek announced a grant for activities under the Integrated Technical Cooperation Programme and the IMO Voluntary Multi-Donor Trust Fund. This funding will assist developing countries, especially those least developed and small island states, in attending IMO meetings.

Mohammed Khamis Al Kaabi noted that participating in IMO meetings shows the UAE's commitment to global maritime development and environmental sustainability. He mentioned that initiatives are underway to reduce carbon footprints and implement top environmental practices. The goal is to strengthen the UAE's role as a leader in promoting a blue economy.

The IMO serves as a specialised agency of the United Nations responsible for setting global standards for shipping safety, security, and environmental performance. Its primary function is establishing a regulatory framework that is fair, effective, universally adopted, and implemented across international shipping industries.

The UAE remains focused on sustaining its maritime sector through innovative solutions aimed at reducing emissions while fostering international cooperation. By aligning with IMO goals, it seeks to bolster its position as a key player in global maritime affairs.
