UAE Strengthens Global Water Cooperation At 35th World Water Week In Stockholm

The UAE took part in the 35th World Water Week in Stockholm, led by Abdulla Balalaa, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Energy and Sustainability. This participation aligns with its joint efforts with Senegal to co-host the 2026 United Nations Water Conference. The focus is on advancing Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6), which aims for sustainable water and sanitation management for everyone.

During the event, discussions centred around water's vital role in climate resilience, food and energy security, and sustainable development. The theme "Water for Climate Action" highlighted these aspects. The UAE actively contributed to conversations about the upcoming 2026 UN Water Conference, emphasising its importance.

UAE Advances Global Water Cooperation Efforts

Abdulla Balalaa, speaking at the opening ceremony, stressed the significance of all 193 UN Member States agreeing on six interactive dialogues for the 2026 Conference. He stated: "The adoption of the six dialogues is a watershed moment for multilateral water action. They provide a clear framework for aligning global priorities, ensuring accountability, and delivering tangible solutions."

The UAE introduced the dialogue 'Water for Planet,' highlighting water's link to climate change. This initiative aims to encourage countries to include water considerations in their climate plans, building on COP28's progress. Balalaa also mentioned that selecting two co-chairs for each dialogue began recently, with Member States invited to express interest by mid-October.

The UAE delegation underscored an inclusive approach to the 2026 Conference by engaging with UN agencies, governments, civil society, academia, youth, and private sectors. Discussions focused on humanitarian aspects of water, Indigenous Peoples' roles, youth engagement in global processes, innovative financing methods, and integrating water into global climate and biodiversity agendas.

On the sidelines of World Water Week, Abdulla Balalaa met Swedish officials from various ministries and institutions like KTH Royal Institute of Technology and SKC. He also discussed regional cooperation with Dr. Hani Sewilam from Egypt’s Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation.

Strengthening International Partnerships

Ghasaq Shaheen, UAE Ambassador to Sweden, joined Balalaa in emphasising strengthening UAE-Sweden collaboration in sustainability and innovation related to water. These meetings reflect the UAE’s dedication to international cooperation and enhancing global water security.

The UAE's involvement showcases its commitment to uniting global efforts towards a sustainable future through enhanced water action. Together with Senegal, they aim for the 2026 UN Water Conference to be a pivotal moment in accelerating global initiatives for sustainable water management.
