UAE's Strategies And Policies Propel Global Women's Leadership, Says Noura Al Suwaidi
The UAE has prioritised women's empowerment as a key element of its development strategy. Noura Al Suwaidi, Secretary-General of the General Women's Union (GWU), highlighted this at the 69th session of the Commission on the Status of Women in New York. During a panel discussion, she noted that the UAE's ambitious vision and determination have positioned it as a leader in promoting women's roles globally.
Al Suwaidi emphasised that women's empowerment is central to the UAE Centennial 2071 vision. This initiative aims to establish global leadership by investing in human capital, embracing innovation, and fostering a sustainable knowledge economy. The vision underscores the importance of gender equality in achieving these goals.

The UAE's commitment to gender equality is evident through its significant achievements. Emirati women make up over 54 percent of the labour market, positioning the UAE as a regional leader. Additionally, women hold 50 percent of the seats in the Federal National Council, marking a historic achievement in the Arab world.
Women also comprise 26 percent of the Cabinet, leading important sectors like international cooperation and education. These milestones reflect the country's dedication to enhancing women's roles across various fields and ensuring gender balance in decision-making positions.
H.H. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak has played a crucial role in advancing women's empowerment for over five decades. As Chairwoman of GWU and President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, her leadership has been instrumental in establishing strategies that elevate Emirati women locally and globally.
Since founding GWU and launching the Women Literacy and Education Strategy in 1975, significant progress has been made. The UAE has pioneered efforts to remove barriers to women's advancement, supporting female entrepreneurs and promoting gender balance across all sectors.
Regional Collaboration for Women's Empowerment
The panel discussion also included representatives from Saudi Arabia, Oman, Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt, and UN Women. This collaboration highlights regional efforts to promote women's economic empowerment across the Middle East, North Africa, and Gulf States.
The collective focus on empowering women underscores a shared commitment to enhancing their roles in various sectors. By working together, these countries aim to achieve greater gender equality and support women's contributions to society.
The UAE's dedication to empowering women is evident through its comprehensive strategies and policies. By focusing on education, entrepreneurship support, and leadership opportunities, the country continues to make remarkable strides towards gender equality.
