UAE Special Olympics: A Leading Model For Empowering People Of Determination In Sports

The UAE Special Olympics has been making significant strides in promoting the inclusion and empowerment of People of Determination. This movement, which began in the early 1990s under the UAE Disabled Sports Federation, has trained numerous athletes and hosted various competitions. In 2017, it was re-established as a public benefit organisation under the Ministry of Community Development, guided by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

The UAE Special Olympics gained considerable momentum after hosting the 2019 Special Olympics World Games in Abu Dhabi. This event marked a historic achievement for the UAE delegation, with participation from 7,000 athletes representing 200 countries. The UAE's performance at these Games set a new benchmark for future events.

Empowering People of Determination in UAE Sports

In subsequent years, UAE athletes continued to excel on international stages. At the 2023 World Games in Berlin, they achieved an impressive haul of 73 medals, including 18 golds. This accomplishment marked the best performance by an Arab country at the event. The success story continued at the Torino Games in Italy, where UAE athletes secured 16 medals.

UAE athletes have also shone brightly in regional competitions. During the Middle East and North Africa Athletics Championship held in Amman in February 2024, they won 22 medals, comprising 12 golds and 10 silvers. Their achievements highlight their dedication and skill on both regional and global platforms.

In May 2024, the UAE hosted its inaugural Special Olympics Games. This event featured two segments: one for Unified Schools with 400 participants and another involving over 600 athletes from clubs nationwide. Such initiatives underscore the country's commitment to fostering sports among People of Determination.

Continued Growth and Development

The UAE Special Olympics' journey has been marked by continuous growth and development. At the Malta National Games in 2024, UAE athletes earned 15 medals across five sports categories. Additionally, during the Asian Classic Powerlifting Championships in Malaysia, they secured an impressive tally of 20 medals.

Talal Al Hashemi, National Director of UAE Special Olympics, stated: "Since the 2019 Abu Dhabi Games, we have witnessed a new era of empowerment and excellence for People of Determination in sports. We have invested in a strategy aligned with the wise leadership’s vision to support individuals with intellectual and developmental challenges."

The ongoing efforts by the UAE Special Olympics reflect a strong commitment to enhancing opportunities for People of Determination through sports. By consistently achieving remarkable results on international stages, they continue to inspire others while promoting inclusivity within society.
