UAE And WFP Collaborate To Accelerate Sudan Humanitarian Aid With USD 20 Million Grant

The United Arab Emirates has expanded humanitarian assistance for Sudan, confirming a US$20 million grant through a new cooperation agreement with the United Nations World Food Programme. The funding supports emergency food deliveries for people affected by the conflict and aims to reduce severe food insecurity across Sudan.

The grant targets communities inside Sudan and displaced groups in neighbouring host states, where conflict has disrupted supply chains. Priority groups include internally displaced people, refugees, and vulnerable households in areas at risk of famine, with rapid deployment planned through WFP’s existing logistics systems.

The UAE frames this agreement as part of a wider multi-year engagement with Sudan. Between 2015 and 2025, total Emirati assistance to Sudan reaches US$4.24 billion. Within that, US$784 million is identified as humanitarian support allocated after the civil war escalated between 2023 and 2025.

To clarify the financial timeline and humanitarian allocations for Sudan, the figures released are shown below in structured form, covering overall assistance and the portion linked to the civil war period.

The agreement is signed between the UAE Aid Agency and the United Nations World Food Programme. Rashid Salem Al Shamsi, Executive Director of Logistics Support at the Agency, signs on behalf of the UAE, while Bashar Al Hammami, Head of the WFP Partnership Office in the UAE, represents WFP during the ceremony.

The signing takes place in the presence of Dr. Tareq Ahmed Al Ameri, Chairman of UAE Aid Agency. Under the terms, WFP will channel the US$20 million into food procurement, transport and distribution. The main objective is to accelerate emergency response capacity and stabilise access to basic food supplies.

UAE humanitarian aid Sudan, regional reach and policy approach

Dr. Tareq Ahmed Al Ameri states that the UAE intends to maintain its role in global humanitarian response. Dr. Tareq Ahmed Al Ameri stresses that food relief must reach displaced people inside Sudan and also Sudanese communities sheltering in Chad, South Sudan, Uganda and Ethiopia.

Dr. Tareq Ahmed Al Ameri also highlights what is described as a shared international and moral duty to act in areas facing famine risks. Dr. Tareq Ahmed Al Ameri notes that emergency operations need to focus on life-saving assistance in locations where conflict and hunger overlap.

Bashar Al Hammami, Head of the WFP Partnership Office in the UAE, stated, "The United Nations World Food Programme expresses its profound gratitude and appreciation to the Government of the United Arab Emirates for its generous contribution of US$20 million, which will support WFP’s life-saving operations in Sudan. This significant contribution will enable us to reach millions of people facing acute hunger and daily hardship, and will have a tangible, life-saving impact on the lives of vulnerable families."

The UAE links this latest support package with wider diplomatic messaging on Sudan. Officials reaffirm the need for coordinated action with regional and international partners and call for a humanitarian ceasefire. The aim is to protect civilians, keep aid corridors open, and support conditions for stability and peace for the Sudanese population.
