UAE Elected To UN Commission On Narcotic Drugs For Asia-Pacific Representation In 2026-2029
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has secured a seat on the United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) for the 2026–2029 term. This election, held at the UN Headquarters in New York, positions the UAE as a representative of the Asia-Pacific Group. The CND is a central policymaking body within the United Nations system, tasked with shaping global drug policy.
Established by the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the CND plays a crucial role in overseeing international drug control conventions. It ensures treaty implementation and fosters international collaboration to tackle drug-related issues. The UAE's election highlights its strong diplomatic relations and its active role in addressing narcotic drug challenges globally.

Joining Pakistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan, the UAE will represent the Asia-Pacific Group on this key ECOSOC subsidiary body. Membership allows the UAE to influence international drug policies by proposing, contributing to, and voting on resolutions. This underscores its commitment to enhancing global security and combating illegal narcotics spread.
The Commission on Narcotic Drugs was created by ECOSOC Resolution No. 9 in 1946 to monitor international drug control treaties. In 1991, its mandate expanded to include governance of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). The Commission meets annually to adopt resolutions that guide global drug control efforts.
A significant milestone was reached in 2019 when the Commission adopted a Ministerial Declaration aimed at strengthening action against global drug problems. Member states committed to reviewing progress by 2029, with a midterm review scheduled for 2024. This declaration emphasizes coordinated efforts at national, regional, and international levels.
The Commission actively implements this declaration by reviewing global trends in drug supply and demand. It adopts resolutions and leads policy formulation to counteract world drug issues effectively. Its work is essential for developing an integrated strategy that safeguards communities worldwide.
The UAE's involvement in the CND reflects its growing influence on the global stage. By participating actively in shaping international frameworks, it aims to maintain a balanced approach to drug supply and demand while promoting security and cooperation among nations.
